There are regulations that control what abilities debt collectors have when they are contacting a debtor and trying to receive payment on loans. These are meant to protect the debtor from being harassed by collectors.
It is important to know that a debtor can stop a debt collector from contacting them by calling or sending a letter to ask them to stop. While this does not end your obligation to pay off debt, it stops the collectors abilities from contacting your through mail, telephone, telegram, or fax. However, a court order or any court documents cannot be ignored. Furthermore, collectors cannot swear, threaten, hide their identity, or publicize your name. They also cannot attempt to collect an amount greater than what you owe or deposit checks that are post-dated before their date.
