Global stagnation in addressing climate change has not discouraged cities worldwide from taking the lead on becoming more environmentally sustainable.
Minnesota cities are no exception. This was highlighted at the 2016 Minnesota League of Cities Annual Conference, where six cities were recognized for reaching the highest level of environmental stewardship in the state’s GreenStep Cities program. The six cities were:
- Eden Prairie
- Elk River
- Saint Anthony
More than a hundred other cities are enrolled in GreenStep and are also working towards the highest level of stewardship. As outlined by Minnesota Public Radio, the sustainability projects implemented by these cities range from solar arrays to composting.
Going green is not a simple affair, especially for small municipalities with limited resources. It is essential that cities develop partnerships across sectors as they continue their drive towards sustainability.
JUX Law Firm works with leaders and organizations that provide invaluable resources to cities in their green transitions. Examples include Gregg Mast of Clean Energy Economy Minnesota and Kelly Cain of St. Croix Institute.
